How the DOT SAP Program Works

Substance Abuse Evaluation: After an employee fails a drug or alcohol test, they must undergo an evaluation by a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). The SAP conducts an in-depth assessment to understand the employee’s substance abuse issues and recommends a treatment or counseling program.

Treatment Recommendations: Based on the evaluation, the SAP will suggest a treatment plan tailored to the employee’s specific needs. This may include counseling, therapy, or educational programs aimed at addressing the underlying causes of substance use.

Follow-Up Evaluation: After completing the prescribed treatment plan, the employee must undergo a follow-up evaluation with the SAP to determine whether they are fit to return to work in a safety-sensitive position.

Return-to-Duty Drug Test: Once the SAP has cleared the employee and recommends a return to work, they must pass a return-to-duty drug test to confirm they are free from alcohol or drugs before resuming their safety-sensitive duties.

Ongoing Monitoring & Follow-Up: Even after returning to work, the employee will be subject to random, unannounced drug and alcohol tests for up to 12 months, as part of the follow-up monitoring process to ensure long-term sobriety.
