DOT Follow-Up Testing Program

DOT Follow-Up Testing Program - On-Time Screening
At On-Time Screening, we offer a comprehensive DOT Follow-Up Testing Program to help employers maintain a safe and compliant workforce. Follow-up testing is an essential part of the DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations for employees who have previously violated drug or alcohol policies. Our program ensures that employees remain drug-free after returning to safety-sensitive positions while adhering to all federal requirements.
What is DOT Follow-Up Testing?
DOT Follow-Up Testing is a critical component of the DOT drug and alcohol compliance process. After an employee has successfully completed the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) program and returned to their safety-sensitive position, they are subject to follow-up drug and alcohol testing. These tests are conducted over a period of a minimum of 12 months as part of ongoing monitoring to ensure that the employee remains drug- and alcohol-free. ALL Follow-up tests must be completed by a DER unless you are an owner operator.

How DOT Follow-Up Testing Works
-
Employee Completes SAP Program: After an employee violates DOT drug or alcohol policies, they are required to complete a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) program, which involves treatment, counseling, and evaluation.
-
Return-to-Duty Testing: Once the employee has completed the SAP program and is cleared to return to their safety-sensitive role, they must pass a return-to-duty drug and alcohol test before resuming their duties.
-
Follow-Up Testing Plan: After the employee has successfully returned to work, they are subject to follow-up testing. This testing is designed to monitor their ongoing sobriety and compliance. The employee will be subject to random, unannounced tests throughout a minimum of a 12-month period.
-
Frequency of Testing: The number and frequency of follow-up tests are determined by the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) based on the employee’s specific needs and history, but they must include a minimum of at least 6 tests in the first 12 months after return-to-duty.
-
Testing Administration: Follow-up tests may include urine, oral fluid, or blood samples. These tests are administered randomly and without prior notice to the employee, ensuring the integrity of the process and must be completed by a DER, unless you are an owner operator.
-
Lab Analysis & MRO Review: All samples are sent to a certified laboratory for testing. All Positive or non positive results are reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO) to confirm accuracy and legitimacy.
-
Ongoing Monitoring and Support: Follow-up testing continues as part of a long-term monitoring program to ensure the employee remains free from drugs and alcohol. If necessary, additional tests may be required based on the SAP’s recommendations.
When is DOT Follow-Up Testing Required?
-
After Return-to-Duty Testing: Follow-up testing is required once an employee has successfully completed the SAP program, passed return-to-duty testing, and resumed their safety-sensitive job.
-
Up to 12 Months of Monitoring: The employee will be subject to follow-up testing for a period of up to 12 months after their return to duty. The testing frequency is set by the SAP but is typically done at least 6 times within the first year.
-
Random & Unannounced: Follow-up tests are random and unannounced, ensuring the integrity of the program and that employees remain compliant at all times.
